Footpath and Walking Environment sub-committee

The Footpath and Walking Environment sub-committee (FPAWE)’s role is to carry forward, in Hampshire, the Ramblers charitable objectives relating to rights of way, access to the countryside and the protection and enhancement of the walking environment.

It provides:

Advice and guidance to the Area Council on all Footpath, access and walking environment matters in the Area
Co-ordinates the work of the individual Hampshire Groups by making representations on behalf of the Area Council to the highway and local planning authorities, to Ramblers Central Office and to other external bodies where appropriate

The FPAWE sub-committee has developed a range of guidance to explain how the Area’s objectives are implemented and to advise volunteers on how they should approach the tasks.

MoD Training Estate: FAQs

1. Where does this arrangement apply?

The notification arrangement applies to all parts of the MoD Training Estate in North East Hampshire and North West Surrey where Byelaw access is permitted.

Managed Access Land: Most of these areas are marked on OS maps with open red triangles.
Range Danger Areas: Marked with solid red triangles. These are usually live-firing ranges where public access is strictly restricted.

2. What about Public Rights of Way?

Public Rights of Way (PRoW) are generally not affected by this arrangement, unless subject to “red flag” restrictions (see below).

Many of you will be aware of the guidance about walks planned to take place on MoD land locally which was published in 2014 on the Hampshire and Surrey Area websites. After more than 6 years, this advice has been updated to reflect the current situation.

In the Ramblers, the Area serves as the vital strategic bridge between our local walking Groups, the national Central Office and our local highway authorities, currently Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council.

Winchester Walking Weekend

Winchester Ramblers, in association with Hampshire Young Walkers and the Hampshire 40+ Walking Group, ran the third Winchester Walking Weekend in June.

Joining your Group or Area committee
Path Watcher, walking the Rights of Way in a local patch, logging and reporting any problems with signage and access to the Hampshire Countryside Service Team
Path clearance work, helping to keep footpaths clear and walkable
